Research Descriptions:
Short: Recovery from traumatic CNS injury; neurosteroid hormones; CNS plasticity.
Long: Neural Plasticity, Traumatic Brain Injury, Stroke

Our lab studies the role of neurosteroid hormones such as progesterone in enhancing morphological, molecular and behavioral recovery of function after traumatic and ischemic brain injury.

The mission of our laboratory is to understand the physiological, anatomical, and biochemical bases of recovery from traumatic and ischemic brain injury. Each year, in the United States alone, over two million people suffer a serious head injury. At present, there is no clinically effective treatment for TBI and only very limited treatment for stroke. To attack this problem, our lab takes a multi-disciplinary approach, working from the laboratory bench to the patient's bedside in trying to develop safe and effective treatments for brain damage. We examine how different kinds of brain injuries produce morphological, neurochemical and genomic changes in the central nervous system that are associated with behavioral dysfunctions. We are currently investigating progesterone treatments for TBI, ischemic stroke, neonatal hypoxia, retinal neuropathy, and certain CNS cancers; and combinatorial treatments with progesterone and Vitamin D. As a part of this research effort, we also examine how sex differences influence the outcome of these treatments.
