Fernbank Science Center Gardens, Spring 2014
On Saturday, June 21st, 2014, about 30 GIVE volunteers assisted with the construction of a new gardens area at the Fernbank Science Center (FSC) in Atlanta. The volunteers helped construct an earthen berm, spread mulch, develop a walking path, remove weeds, build and lay soil down for two new herb gardens, and even dig a retention pond large enough to hold 70 gallons of water! This event was not just a labor-intensive event because our volunteers learned the purpose of each task and thus new skills and methods for gardening. In addition, a lunch social was held afterwards; thankfully, the FSC staff let us have our picnic-style lunch indoors after working outside for 3 hours in the Georgia summer heat! The FSC Staff and Master Gardeners were extremely grateful for our contributions, stating that we did in one day what would have taken them the whole summer to complete! Due to the popularity among the GIVE volunteers, we are now volunteering at FSC Gardens on a monthly basis. Thank you to all who participated and have made this event into a recurring GIVE activity!
